10 Personal Statement Mistakes to Avoid
8 July 2026
Most personal statements fail in the same predictable ways. Avoiding these puts you ahead of a surprising share of applicants.
1. Clichéd openers
"From a young age…" and "I have always been passionate about…" are instant tells. Start with something only you could write.
2. Interest without evidence
Claiming curiosity you can't back with reading or action.
3. Listing, not reflecting
Naming activities without saying what you learned.
4. Trying to sound clever
Long words and quotes rarely impress; clear reasoning does.
5. Writing a biography
Tutors want your thinking now, not a life story.
6. Ignoring the course
Generic statements that could apply anywhere.
7. Hardship-fishing
Manufacturing adversity for sympathy.
8. Contrarianism
Disagreeing with everything to seem original.
9. Weak endings
Trailing off instead of landing a point.
10. Not sounding human
UCAS runs similarity checks; the safest statement is the one only you could have written.
Writ flags these by name as you write — including subject-specific clichés — and won't sign off a section until you've defended it.
