How to Write a Law Personal Statement

8 July 2026

Law tutors read for reasoning, precision, and genuine engagement with how law works — not for courtroom drama or a desire for justice in the abstract.

Show how you think

Law is argument. Take a case, a legal question, or an ethical dilemma and reason through it — claim, counter-claim, conclusion.

Read beyond the headlines

Reference something substantial: a book on legal reasoning, a landmark case, a live debate about the law. Say what it made you think.

Evidence your interest

Mooting, debating, the LNAT-style reasoning, essay competitions, or a placement — with reflection.

Precision matters

Sloppy writing undermines a law application more than most. Every sentence should earn its place.

Avoid

"I want to fight for justice", legal dramas as inspiration, and vague admiration for "the law."

Writ pushes your argument through multiple rounds of hard questions, exactly as a tutor would — so your reasoning is watertight before a human ever reads it.
