How Long Should a UCAS Personal Statement Be?
8 July 2026
Under the new UCAS format, the personal statement is around 4,000 characters split across three questions — not the old single 47-line, 4,000-character essay. Here's how to use the space well.
The real constraint
It's characters, not words or lines. Roughly 650–700 words total across the three sections. Write to the idea, not the limit.
Don't pad
Every sentence should add evidence or reasoning. A tight 3,600-character statement beats a padded 4,000.
Balance the sections
You don't have to split evenly, but no section should feel starved. Give the most space to whichever prompt you have the strongest evidence for.
Edit ruthlessly
First drafts are always too long and too vague. Cut adjectives, keep specifics.
The right length
As long as it needs to be to make the point clearly, and no longer.
