How to Write an Economics Personal Statement
8 July 2026
Economics is one of the most competitive UK courses, and the statements that stand out show economic reasoning, not just an interest in money or current affairs.
Lead with a real question
Not "the economy fascinates me" — a specific puzzle. A market failure, a policy that backfired, an idea from reading that reframed how you see incentives.
Show you can think like an economist
Reference a concept and apply it. Marginal thinking, opportunity cost, elasticity — used to analyse something real, not defined like a textbook.
Evidence your reading
Beyond the A-level spec: a book, a paper, a serious podcast. Say what it changed in your thinking, not just that you read it.
Supercurriculars that count
Olympiads, essay competitions (Marshall Society, RES), the Bank of England's resources. Depth beats a long list.
Avoid
"Economics is everywhere", quoting Freakonomics as your only source, and confusing business with economics.
Writ's coach is calibrated for Economics specifically — it flags subject clichés by name and pushes your reasoning until it's genuinely rigorous.
