How to Write a Computer Science Personal Statement
8 July 2026
Strong Computer Science statements show that you build and reason, not just that you like technology. Tutors want evidence of genuine problem-solving.
Show what you've made
A project, a program, something you built and improved. Say what was hard and how you solved it — that's the real signal.
Reason about the concepts
Reference an idea from computing (an algorithm, a data structure, a problem in complexity or AI) and show you understand why it matters.
Read and explore
Beyond coding tutorials: a book on how computers or algorithms work, a serious course, a competition (Olympiad, Bebras).
Maths matters
CS is mathematical. Signalling comfort with logic and abstraction helps.
Avoid
"I've loved computers since I got my first PC", listing languages like a CV, and gaming as your main motivation.
Writ coaches Computer Science applicants specifically — it pushes past "I enjoy coding" to the reasoning and building that actually wins offers, and holds you to the projects you've really done.
